Just a teaser...
this is just a quick sample of the last two days in Moab, UT...
26 Nov: Arches National Park at sunset
27 Nov: Dead Horse Point State Park at sunrise (well, sort of...maybe a bit afterwards)
For the record, there was no railing...the edge was right there.
I'll post the Picasa link as soon as I get more processed.

Happy Thanksgiving
I had today all planned out...until the message came that the golf course would be open today...yeah! However, I still flew the airplane. I went a bit North, then crossed the mtn ridge. these pictures are looking south...Amazing how much snow on this side of the mtns. No wonder the ski resorts are opening.

I'm not a big baker...requires too much precision and that's the last thing I want to deal with in the kitchen. However, I decided to do a cranberry spice cake for my thanksgiving desert (I know heresy not having a pumpkin pie). I couldn't resist trying it tonite...yummy.

Peppy was a bit cute tonite...I went to pick her up to put her home for the night, and instead of coming to me and getting on my finger, she put her head in my hand to be scratched...

Lazy day...it started out good with a run, but by the time church ended, all I wanted to do was curl up with a book. Not my best effort...sorry, took too many yesterday ;)

19 Nov
It snowed last night...actually more snow south than to the north. I found one of the migratory bird refuges up near Brigham City. The lady at the welcome center was odd...kept telling me i wouldn't see much, especially since it was hunting season and that I should just stay for the movie. okay, so most birds have come through already, but you shouldn't discourage someone from visiting.
Sorry for being image heavy again, but I had a 36 mile car trip through the refuge...
I am pretty sure this one is a male Northern Harrier:
Lots of Clark's Grebes, possible some Northern Grebes as well. In addition, American Coots, and all sorts of ducks. I even saw a cormorant (not usual at this time of the year), as well as an avocet (or was he a stilt, too far away and backlight to tell)...
Okay, this hawk has me stumped again...he was huge. My thought is a Goshawk or a Rough-legged.
Being a Miami Hurricane, I have only ever thought of the Ibis being a Southeastern bird...boy am I wrong...white faced are here!
landscapes:
Okay, finally the reason I went here...I heard there were thousands of tundra swans...unfortunately they were too far off to even see, let alone take a picture of. Except the two that flew directly overhead.
I did see a few flocks of them flying, but I was driving. Same goes for the lone eagle I saw. Supposedly as winter sets in, they nest around here. Yea!
P.S. Don't tell Mark how dirty I got his car...half the trip was on a muddy road...

A second look
I started looking at my picture and decided i could do better with the post-processing....
although it's a little darker, I think that cuts the glare from the flash a bit.
maybe I'm wrong....it happens occasionally

More snow...why on the weekends? The temps during the week have been in the high 40's and clear) perfect golf wx), but on Fridays it snows...I think it's a conspiracy

17 Nov
It's really hard to find a spot to take a picture out towards the sunset without houses in it...even harder when you are leaving work at sunset (and it's barely after 5pm...)

Another orchid
The jewel orchid is blooming... for most the flowers on this plant are not the show, it's the leaves. I'm happy with the flowers.

13 Nov 11
There are multiple pictures for today...
1.) picture of the day
2.) Portraits: Tad and Rita left today, so we did a family photo, unfortunately they were missing one important member of the family....
3.) Birds: After dropping Tad and Rita at the airport, i tried to find the wildlife refuge.
Northern Shovelers
I have seen this type of hawk all over the place...the other day we were thinking Coopers, but looking at these picture I'm thinking Norther Harrier, although they are darker (even for females) than it seems to say. The face is owlish and the rump (not tail) is white
And I don't know, but this looks like a Kestrel to me...Rita, am I right?
Sorry for the clutter/confusion, but give that Mark can't get to my picasa, it's easier to do this for him...

Things I'm good at: Landscapes...
Not so good at and need practice...people shots. Although, I personally think this one's pretty good (the subject is wonderful!)

8-9 Nov (2nd Try)
I think I messed something up last night...so I'm reposting

9 Nov: Remember when stamps were this cheap? I found these in some of the stuff I haven't unpacked yet.
It's interesting...I had a Commander's Call yesterday. Instead of doing the anthem, I had everyone recite the pledge of allegiance. One of the folks came up and thanked me yesterday, as it had been a while since he had done that. A unique touch I thought.

The sun made the mountains look a bit pink this evening. This is actually from the Hill AFB Golf Course. Was the closest place to get an unobstructed view of the mts.

Early Christmas gift...
California Wine Club annually sends out a gift to customers. I was surprised to get something this year, since the move to UT made us cancel the subscriptions. These gifts are never cheap either...

Chocolate Milk Stout...the recipe is a bit different than regular milk stout (no lactose). In addition, I added a bit of chocolate flavoring prior to second fermentation. The picture makes it hard to tell that the beer is a bit lighter than I was expecting, but it is good.
